Will the Dolan era in New York finally come to a close? According to what Knicks legend Charles Oakley has heard, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos would be interested.
“I heard that Jeff Bezos wants to buy the Knicks,” Oakley said. “He was gonna try to do Amazon in Long Island City, and he went to Virginia. So he still wanted to do some real estate in New York. So why not buy the Garden?“
“That’s someone you can’t question,” Oakley said of Bezos. “It ain’t like he needs to get three or four other investors. He’s the investor, himself.”
Oakley isn’t wrong, Bezos is currently worth around a staggering $131.4 billion, according to Forbes. Usually, buying an professional sports teams takes groups of investors. But, as Oakley notes — Bezos can just buy the whole team himself without issue.
To add, current Knicks owner James Dolan has not ruled out selling the team. In recent weeks, Dolan has come under fire for confrontations with fans, lowering his approval rating. The New York Knicks are currently the worst team in the NBA, sporting a 15-62 record. The Knicks are heading towards a high draft pick, and possible max contract players in the offseason. The timing could be there for Dolan to exit, with Bezos entering as a fresh new start to the franchise.
