Another day, another AL Central duel to profile. We’ve also added a look at an impending free agent who is having a great second half of his season. Check ’em out!
JosA Quintana (CWS) versus Danny Duffy (KCR)
2:15 p.m. ET
After a rough start to the month of September, Quintana rebounded with a sturdy effort against the Indians last time out, fanning six and walking just one over eight strong innings with just one earned run and eight hits. He’s still carrying a 5.49 ERA for the month however, which gives a pretty good indication to how his first two starts of the month went. Still, it’s been nothing short of an excellent season for Quintana, who can join an exclusive club of AL pitchers with sub-3.00 ERA marks with another solid start here. With a 3.05 ERA, he’s currently fourth in the junior circuit, as well as seventh in innings, eighth in WHIP and 10th in raw strikeout count (171).
Even in a slightly cooler month of September for Duffy as well (4.26 ERA), the 27-year-old left-hander has still managed a 24-3 K/BB ratio over 19 innings. It’s been an incredible season for Duffy as he’s transitioned to the rotation, as he’s sixth in WHIP, seventh in ERA and eighth in raw strikeout count despite making only 23 starts to date. He’s guaranteed to remained in the a?qualifieda? discussion as of his last startahe’s now at 162.2 inningsaand for the year, here’s where he’s at: 3.15 ERA, 173-34 K/BB ratio in 162.2 innings, 1.07 WHIP and .231 BAA. The only real strange thing is that he’s allowed 22 home runs, including 21 since moving to the rotation.
Impending free agent Ivan Nova has sure made himself some money in Pittsburgh. In eight starts since he was traded from the Yankees to the Pirates, Nova has put together quite a stretch: 2.41 ERA, .236/.251/.390 opponents’ triple-slash and a 43-3 K/BB ratio in 52.1 innings. The slugging percentage is a big high, but the K/BB ratio will still entice a lot of teams. We saw J.A. Happ get three years and in excess of $10 million per season with the Pirates last yearacould Nova do the same?
