At long last, it looks like Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez is getting his move to Manchester City.
According to John Percy of The Telegraph, he’s expected to join City sometime this week. This comes months after not being able to force one through back in winter. Better late than never, right?
As far as fees go, it’s in the neighborhood of £60 million. That’s a far cry from Leicester’s demand of £95 million during the winter window, yet still great money for the club. If and when Mahrez moves, though, we don’t know exactly where he’s going to play. Or how often. After all, City have wingers for days. Consistent playing time is no guarantee with the likes of Leroy Sané and Raheem Sterling also in the squad.
Don’t get me wrong, this is still an excellent get for City. They are somehow getting stronger. With links to both Chelsea and Tottenham over the past year and a half, it’s always beneficial to snatch potential talent from your rivals. (He was never going to those clubs anyway… maybe Chelsea). With the dominance Pep Guardiola’s side put on display for us last season, the rest of the Premier League should be worried. City just won the league by a whopping 19 points. They found the back of the net 106 times while doing so. Now they’re adding Mahrez? Yeesh.
Last season for Leicester, the Algerian found the back of the net 12 times with 11 assists. Two seasons before that, during Leicester’s dream title run, he found the back of the net 17 times while racking up 10 assists. After another slow start to this past campaign, Leicester rallied to finish ninth. When the motivation is there, Mahrez is one heckuva player. If anybody is going to motivate him now, it’s Pep.
Oh, and playing for the best team in the Premier League probably doesn’t hurt either.
