The Chicago Cubs have cast a wide net on the free agent market this offseason. Having already signed Tyler Chatwood hasn’t stopped their search, however. But now, they are setting their sights higher. Much higher.

Simply putapoor World Series asideaDarvish is an ace. Of course, he’s halfway to being 32 years old. He’s someone who has already come back from Tommy John surgery. So sure, health is an issue going forward. And yes, age is also an issue going forward.
But the Cubs have money to spend, and Darvish is a very good option.
And while the numbers from 2017 don’t paint a great picture (3.86 ERA, 3.81), we must look a little deeper. Looking at WARP (viaABaseball Prospectus),Athis was his third-best season. Moreover, it’s his best since 2013. His k-rate of 27.3 percent is on the lower side of his career totals, but not by much.
Then there’s his Deserved Run Averagea3.08awhich is his best mark since 2014. Of course, Darvish wouldn’t play at all in 2015 while recovering from surgery. But still, he’s going to demand big money in free agency.
Therefore, why shouldn’t the Cubsawhose championship window is still openatake that chance?
