The San Francisco Giants are ready to party like it’s 2013. Earlier in the offseason, the Giants would acquire Evan Longoria from the Tampa Bay Rays. But now they’re adding to their outfieldaacquiring Andrew McCutchen from the Pirates. Of course, the Giants need all the help they can get after just enduring a 64-98 season.
But, how much can we expect out of McCutchen going forward? Per Ken Rosenthal, this trade is all but finalapending medical reviews.
#SFGiants have agreed to acquire Andrew McCutchen from the #Pirates, pending a review of medical records, sources tell The Athletic.”
This is the second trade in the past week for the Pirates, who are apparently looking to rebuild. Before this, they would ship Gerrit Cole to the defending champion Houston Astros. But the Giants, on the other hand, should still be excited about what McCutchen can still offer. While Longoria’s bat started to lose value a while ago, Cutch is a little trickier.
The outfielder had a very rough 2016, but did heat up from August on. Then, despite a down second half last season, his 2017 numbers were solid. They would include a .279/.363/.486 triple-slash (.849 OPS), 30 doubles and 28 dingers. A far cry from his MVP season (2013), sure, but solid nonetheless. And the Giants sure could use production like this.
As for the Pirates, hopefully for their sake the return is good. After all, the return for Cole left plenty to be desired.
