Gennady Golovkin still has a fight on May 5. But after his positive drug test,ACanelo A?lvarez isn’t his opponent. In fact, he doesn’t have an opponent at all right now. ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports the following:
“There is no announcement,”Asays promoterATom Loeffler. But he doesn’t stop there.
“There has been so much speculation in the press, what opponent, what venue. Because there is so much speculation, Gennady wanted to come down here and sit in front of you and give you an update and say he wants to fight on May 5. Gennady has been sparring and he wants to fight May 5. There have been a lot of challenges, we’ve gone through a lot of names, stuff with the sanctioning bodies.
“I have been in touch with them sorting out an amicable solution for everyone while not denying GGG the opportunity to fight May 5. … Nothing is finalized.”
That doesn’t giveAGolovkin a whole lot of time. But Loeffler explains why so much has to come together in order to findAGolovkin an opponent.
“When you have a unified champion everything has to come together. [Golovkin] has his [mandatory] responsibilities holding so many titles, but he has always lived up to them. We’ve never been in this unique situation before. Everything is on a very condensed schedule. We acknowledge the situation, but at the same time it would be a shame to have a fight, such as Derevyanchenko, promoted on a three-week basis. But we have to follow the rules of the IBF as well as the WBC and WBA, and that’s what we intend to do.”
However, Golovkin just wants a fight. At this point, it almost doesn’t matter who he faces.
“My training camp is hard every day. I want to fight. I ask Tom every day, ‘Please, I just want to fight. Give me fight.’ Unbelievable. Just crazy situation for boxing.”
In the meantime, Golovkin holds a 37-0-1 record in the ring. His only draw, of course, would come againstACanelo A?lvarez on September 16, 2017.
