The New Orleans Pelicans didn’t have many answers for the Golden State Warriors. But their GM, Dell Demps, does have a wishlist for their offseason. And it includes re-signing both DeMarcus Cousins and Rajon Rondo. Of course, Cousins is coming off a season-ending Achilles ending. And there’s no guaranteeing he’ll be back to his normal self next season. Not only that, but it’s going to be tough to bring him back long-term. And at the very least, he’s going to be pricey.
As for Rondo, he’s coming off a wildly successful postseason. Over nine games, he would average 10,3 points on 41.3% shooting (and 42.1% from long range) while adding 12.2 assists and 7.6 rebounds per game. That’s vintage playoff Rondo, of course. And during the regular season, he would average 8.3 points per game on 46.8% shooting (33.3% from long range) while adding 8.2 assists and four rebounds per contest — spanning 65 appearances.
But it’s not a perfect world, and Demps knows bringing this both back will be tough. However, it’s something that’s very much on his mind. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the Pelicans would break it down:
“In a perfect world, we’d love to have (Cousins) back. We want him back. But sometimes things happen that you can’t control in free agency. In a perfect world, we’d like to have him and Rondo back.”
So, will the Pelicans be able to do that? In the meantime, they are coming off a 48-win season and a six-seed. It’s their first playoff appearance and winning season in four years. In fact, the Pelicans have just three winning seasons over their last eight. But with Anthony Davis and Jrue Holiday, the star power is there. They just need another piece before it’s too late.
Who should it be? And more than that, will the Pelicans land him?
