Still doubt Luke Walton as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers? Well, he just got a huge vote of confidence from his coaching peer in Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra.
“He’s the perfect guy to coach that team. He has purple and gold bleeding from him,” Spoelstra told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “And if you look at his whole professional career, all of [it] he has been involved with … teams like this with great expectations, with a lot of pressure and a lot of noise. He doesn’t know any different.”
James put up a season-best 51 points in their win over Miami on Sunday. In other words, business as usual for the king. But Spoelstra knows the pressure of coaching James. Plus, he knows the feeling of being on the hot seat. That is, despite having one of the best players to ever play the game.
“I was just trying to not screw it up,” Spoelstra added. “And I was in survival mode. I didn’t want to get in the way and I found a way to get in the way. And we lost [the NBA Finals] our first year.”
However Los Angeles fares this season, Spoelstra knows that Walton is the right man for James at this point of his career.
“I don’t think you can find a better fit to coach that team,” Spoelstra said.
Meanwhile, the Heat are struggling along at 6-10. They’ve lost two in a row and Dwyane Wade isn’t with the team. But the Lakers are 9-7 and have won five of six. We don’t know how much noise they’ll make out West, but things are starting to click.
Of course, time will tell if the Heat’s head man is right about Walton.
