It’s been quite the week for Austin Rivers.
Over the weekend, Washington Wizards traded the guard to the Phoenix Suns to acquire Trevor Ariza. But then the Suns decided to immediately part ways with Rivers after placing him on waivers.
Rivers, 27, was expected to help the Suns reach the playoffs out West, a source told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. But with a record of 7-24 and being 9.5 games behind Dallas for the eighth seed … it isn’t in the water.
After trade with Wizards, Suns agree to part ways with G Austin Rivers, per ESPN sources. Rivers – earning $12.6M in final year of deal – becomes a free agent upon clearing waivers. As a veteran, sides concluded Rivers fits better on an older team that's pursuing playoffs.

However, the seven-year pro will get his $12.7 million for the 2018 season. This is the final year of his contract.
Rivers put up 7.2 points, 2.4 rebounds and two assists in 29 games with Washington this season. His point totals have been down from his 2016-18 seasons with the Clippers, where he put 13.4 points and 3.3 assists per game.
Now the question is: where will the guard land next? The original rumor told us the Memphis Grizzlies, but that no longer appears be the case. Still, there’s going to be one team that takes a shot on him. We can guarantee that.
