Sunday, the Washington Wizards finally won a game of basketball. In doing so, they would snap their five-game losing streak. They were playing the New York Knicks, after all. But that wasn’t a guarantee of anything going into the contest. Entering Sunday’s game, the Wizards were allowing the most points per game. After the win, they still are (120.7 points).
“We’re leading a lot of the categories in the wrong way,” head coach Scott Brooks told reporters. Obviously there’s a reason they are 2-7 so far this season. There’s a reason they’re the worst team in the Eastern Conference right now. Their defense is absolutely putrid. Scoring the ball? Not a problem in the slightest, as Washington currently ranks sixth out East with 111.3 points per game.
Then on Sunday, they held the Knicks to 95 points in their 108-95 victory at home. John Wall did his part, putting up 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting while adding seven assists and five steals. Bradley Beal put up 22 points as well, shooting 7-of-14 from the field while adding eight rebounds and four blocks.
Still, we cannot say this is a big step in the right direction. It’s certainly a step forward, but the Knicks are a bad basketball team. They’re supposed to be bad this season. Washington needs to beat these teams. And next up, they get the Dallas Mavericks — who are also supposed to be pretty bad this season. Maybe not Knicks-level bad, though still bad. That said, a team can only beat the opponent in front of them.
And the Wizards need to start stringing some wins together regardless of who they play.
