The Trevor Ariza trade that wasn’t still might become something.
Friday night, a three-team trade between the Grizzlies, Wizards and Suns fell through over miscommunication. But ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Wizards and Suns are still discussing a deal over Ariza.
Washington and Phoenix are still talking tonight — trying to find a way to negotiate a new trade centered on Trevor Ariza, league sources tell ESPN.

That said, we just don’t see what the upside is for the Wizards. Ariza is an excellent role player, but the Wizards (11-18) have been playing bad basketball all season. They’ve lost four in a row and are currently 11th out East. However, they are just 2.5 games out of the playoff picture because it’s still the East.
As for the Suns, they’re a league-worst 5-24 as their rebuilding phase continues. Last night, they put an end to their 10-game losing streak with a 10-point win over the Mavericks.
All 26 appearances by Ariza this season have been starts, with him averaging 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Will a trade get done this weekend? Only time will tell. But at the very least, it looks like communication will not be an issue this time. Even if it is, it’ll be hard to top Friday night’s mess.
Up next, Ariza and the Suns host the Timberwolves tonight. As for the Wizards, they play host to the Lakers tomorrow afternoon.
