It looks like Nick Mullens is going to keep getting playing time for the 49ers. After his historic debut Thursday night, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Kyle Shanahan is likely to name him the team’s starter.
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan held off making an announcement until his players return from their time off, but it would be a major surprise if QB Nick Mullens did not start moving forward, sources say. My story: https://t.co/hWgbzkYQS2

On Thursday against the Raiders, Mullens went 16-of-22 (72.7%) for 262 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Not a perfect passer rating, but close — 151.9 to be exact. Not bad for an undrafted second-year pro out of Southern Miss. But with Jimmy Garoppolo out for the season, why not take this chance? After all, we more or less know who C.J. Beathard is at this point. The 49ers (2-7) aren’t going anywhere this season, so they might as well play the hot hand while they’ve got one.
Plus, up next, the Niners take on the terrible, no good 1-7 Giants. In other words, it’s a pretty nice way to ease Mullens into the league. Two starts in two weeks against two of the worst teams in the league? It doesn’t get much better than that. Then again, it’s not always going to be that easy. They’ll take it for as long as it lasts, though. Mullens earned this moment.
Let’s see if he makes the most of it.
