Jimmy Garoppolo is set to become the NFL’s highest-paid player. That’s because the San Francisco 49ers are in agreement with Garoppolo on a five-year extension worth $137.5 million. Oh yeah, it’s all happening today.
“The 49ers and QB Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract, source says. The biggest deal in NFL history on a average-per-year basis.”
Yes, this is almost unbelievable for a quarterback that has just seven NFL starts to his name. But for the 49ers, this makes a whole lot of sense. Meanwhile, wow.
This past season, the New England Patriots would trade their backup to the 49ers for almost nothing. But once Garoppolo would get his chance under center, he didn’t disappoint. The 49ers would win in all five of his starts. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement, of course.
But as we said the other day:
“Why shell out for somebody like Kirk Cousins when Garoppolo is staring you right in the face? Sure heas only had seven career starters, but the Niners are 5-0 in his. A completion rate of 67.4 percent is promising, but heas going to have to cut down on the interceptions. Five in six appearances is less than ideal. However, the Niners went from one of the worst-looking teams in the league to competent.”
There’s real excitement here. The 49ers are not messing around.
