Will Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley suit up for Sunday’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals despite dealing with knee inflammation? And if not Sunday, will he play at all before season’s end?
Gurley was a non-practice participant on Thursday. He even says he won’t practice at all this week. But that’s because he’s shifting his focus to Sunday’s game against the Cardinals. On that note, he offered up these words of encouragement yesterday afternoon..
“I think I’ll be fine [to play on Sunday],” Gurley told ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry. “Just taking it day by day, recovering, resting, trying to feel better.”
At the moment, the Rams are out of the picture as the No. 1 seed in the NFC. But a win over the weekend with New Orleans losing would get them right back in it. Though, Gurley was asked if he would have suited up if the Rams played on Thursday instead. In response, he couldn’t muster up a decisive answer.
“Today? That’s a tough question. I haven’t tried to run, so that’s a tough question,” he added.
While the Rams have secured the NFC West and a playoff berth, it’s still possible for them to give up the No. 2 seed to the Chicago Bears. All it takes is LA losing another game while the Bears win out. Should the Rams beat the Cardinals and Chicago fall to San Francisco this weekend, then the Rams would lock up the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. That would be crucial to helping Gurley heal.
“We got a game and I’m pretty sure me being out there if I can be out there, I would put this team in a good position to help them win,” Gurley continued. “So why wouldn’t I be out there if I can play n this situation? We just lost two. trying to get a first-round bye, like, that’s what we are trying to do. We’re trying to win.”
Needless to say, Gurley has been a premier piece of the Ram’s offense. He has a league-high 21 total touchdowns and is second in rushing, averaging just under 90 yards per game. Head coach Sean McVay knows the value Gurley brings to this team. But he also made it clear that he wouldn’t risk his running back’s health in favor a long playoff run.
“We’re trying to win this football game and do everything we can in our power to do that,” McVay told reporters. “Not at the expense of potentially risking the availability of Todd.”
We’ll see what kind of role he has on Sunday — if he has any at all, that is.
