As it turns out, it appears that missing weight over the weekend won’t come back to haunt Yoel Romero. That’s because UFC president Dana White says there’s going to be a middleweight title bout. And Romero will face off against Robert Whittaker for it sometime in the future.
“Asked Dana White if plan is to have Yoel Romero fight Robert Whittaker next, despite the fact he didn’t win an interim title tonight. Answer: ‘Yes.’”
Romero, of course, comes off of decimating Luke Rockhold at UFC 221. In what could’ve been for the interim belt would end up being little more than an exhibition, however. That’s because the 40-year-old didn’t make weight, instead entering the fight nearly three pounds over the 185-pound threshold. And despite dominating, Rockhold, 30 percent of Romero’s purse goes to his opponent. That’s the price he pays.
But he still gets his title shot. Looks like missing weight is a small price to pay when there’s little-to-no repercussions to speak of. But on the other hand, Rockhold didn’t have to take this fight. It’s noble that he did. Admirable, even. But now he loses his shot. And that’s going to sting for a while. Still, it’s hard to argue for Yoel deserving a title shot.
But that’s the UFC in a nutshell right now.
